FAQ

0. What about your crowdfunded books, ODDS & ENDS vol I & II— why start a book club before you fulfill that?

This is a fair question. The answer is two-fold: first, with the exception of sketchbook art, repurposed con art & private commissions from this year, none of the art I’m using for the book club has been done since I crowdfunded Odds & Ends. I’ve been preparing to do some form of this club for a few years, and have a stockpile of art, almost entirely separate from the work in Odds & Ends, including my existing books, which will populate the mailing for the first year of the program.

Second, Odds & Ends has been my primary project this year, and I won’t start releasing new comics until it is complete and fulfilled through Zoop, which won’t be long now. However, I also have to make a living, so the MGCC as a running subscription is how I hope to buy the time to focus on the final stages of Odds & Ends.

1. Why not a Patreon or Substack?

Primarily, I just don’t like the reading experience for either, as they are just a blog format. I want to offer a more immersive comics & sci-fi vibe, and focus equally or more on physical items.

2. Why not a Kickstarter/Zoop?

I want to fund my overall business, and not just one project at a time. This way I can endlessly publish without having to establish a new funding campaign each time. But don’t worry, I’ll probably still do crowdfunding campaigns for bigger books.

3. Why do you charge for things you can share for free online?

People don’t value what they get for free. But I’ve given away a ton of free content over the years, and will continue to do so, just not the labor intensive stories I make. And even then(!) I’m posting some of my comics for free online.

4. Can I subscribe for someone else as a gift?

Yes! Just provide their shipping address and email address instead of yours, and all rewards will go to them. Plus, for the first quarter, if you subscribe for someone else as a gift, you also get paywall access for a year for free!

5. What if my books are late?

If somehow a delivery is late, it should only be off by a week or two at the most, and I will most certainly communicate very openly ahead of time and during any delay. You’ll receive your books as fast as the delay can be solved, and an extra art gift of some kind will be added as an apology. If books are more than two weeks late, they will be doubled up with the following month’s order, and an event better art extra will be added.

6. Can I get books I missed from before I subscribed?

In some cases yes. But that will have to be judged on a book by book basis. In most cases I think books can either be purchased individually, or substituted for books scheduled for delivery that you already own.

7. Is the Comics Club available internationally?

Soon. Once I run the domestic subscription for awhile, and work out the early kinks, I will be able to offer the MGCC internationally.

8. Can I cancel anytime?

Yeah, but I hope you don’t! We’re just getting started. The best comics and book are just over the next horizon! But yes. Anytime, and it won’t be a pain. And you can come back the same way— no pain.

9. If I cancel in the middle of running stories, do I still get the book?

If a subscriber cancels in the middle of a story that’s still in progress behind the paywall, with nothing printed yet, they don’t get that comic sent when it wraps up. That subscriber only receives whatever was already completed, but yet to ship during their subscription. They will be notified how many days remain when they cancel, and will get whatever rewards are scheduled for that time.

10. Can I return books for a refund?

Sure, but only if you cancel, and only that quarter’s book. But I can’t cover return shipping costs yet, so it will probably cost you almost as much to ship it back as you can make selling the books second hand. Plus, I like finding my books for sale used in stores because they get a second life or more. I want to work with customers, but please understand I am a one person operation, and cannot afford excess costs.
